Now that Joe Johnson has accepted Atlanta’s ridiculous 6 year, 118 million dollar contract offer, it’s time for Ernie Grunfeld to aggressively go after Josh Childress. Atlanta can’t afford him and will probably talk themselves into thinking that since Childress has been in Europe for the past few years while the Hawks were making the playoffs, there’s no reason to bid extra on him.
That’s where the Wizards come in. Josh Childress fits in perfectly with the new look team. He’s 27 years old and would probably sign for three years. He’s a smart, talented player who always knows his place on the squad. He won’t force bad shots, he plays solid defense, and is a great locker room guy. Those are three attributes the Wizards desperately need.
If you just glance at the Wizards roster, it’s easy to tell that there’s an obvious hole at small forward. Washington has already committed to not overspending this offseason, which means they aren’t in the LeBron/Rudy Gay sweepstakes. That’s fine, but they still have to add someone other than Al Thornton. There are a few other available options that I’ve touched on, including Rasual Butler, Travis Outlaw, and Ryan Gomes, but none of those guys are nearly as enticing as Childress.
