Predicting the Wizards Record: Part Three

Time to wrap up predicting Washington’s record for this season. Here’s part three of three.

February

1st at New Orleans Hornets

Prediction: Win

4th versus Orlando Magic

Prediction: Loss

5th versus Atlanta Hawks

Prediction: Loss

9th versus Milwaukee Bucks

Prediction: Win

12th versus San Antonio Spurs

Prediction: Loss

13th at Cleveland Cavaliers

Prediction: Win

16th at Orlando Magic

Prediction: Loss

22nd versus Indiana Pacers

Prediction: Win

23rd at Philadelphia 76ers

Prediction: Loss

25th at Miami Heat

Prediction: Loss

26th versus Dallas Mavericks

Prediction: Loss

28th versus Chicago Bulls

Prediction: Loss

Analysis: Washington’s long road trip could end with a win if the Wizards salvage a victory against the Hornets. February is full of tough games, and Washington’s four-game home stand comes against four playoff teams. 4-8 sounds like a realistic record for the month, and hopefully John Wall or Gilbert Arenas will be appearing in the All-Star game.

March

2nd versus Golden State Warriors

Prediction: Win

5th versus Minnesota Timberwolves

Prediction: Win

6th at Detroit Pistons

Prediction: Win

8th versus Milwaukee Bucks

Prediction: Loss

12th versus Los Angeles Clippers

Prediction: Win

14th versus Oklahoma City Thunder

Prediction: Loss

15th at Chicago Bulls

Prediction: Loss

18th at Toronto Raptors

Prediction: Win

20th versus New Jersey Nets

Prediction: Win

22nd at Portland Trail Blazers

Prediction: Loss

23rd at Los Angeles Clippers

Prediction: Win

25th at Denver Nuggets

Prediction: Loss

27th at Golden State Warriors

Prediction: Win

28th at Utah Jazz

Prediction: Loss

30th versus Miami Heat

Prediction: Loss

Analysis: March starts out with matchups against three of the worst teams in basketball. The end of the month presents a challenge with a West Coast trip, but I’m confident the Wiz can pull out a few wins and finish 8-7 entering April.

April

1st versus Cleveland Cavaliers

Prediction: Win

3rd at Charlotte Bobcats

Prediction: Loss

5th versus Detroit Pistons

Prediction: Win

6th at Indiana Pacers

Prediction: Loss

8th at Boston Celtics

Prediction: Loss

9th versus Atlanta Hawks

Prediction: Loss

11th versus Boston Celtics

Prediction: Loss

13th at Cleveland Cavaliers

Prediction: Win

Analysis: It’s impossible to know which teams will be resting starters or playing for a playoff spot in April, so predicting a record for the month is very tough. Going off what we know at this point, 3-5 seems like a realistic record.

That means for the season, I have the Wizards finishing 34-48. It’s very unlikely such a record would qualify Washington for the playoffs, but in the weak Eastern Conference, it could have them on the bubble.

Obviously, this is a purely a guessing game at the moment. Injuries can occur, players can struggle or break out, and teams that were supposed to do poorly/well might do better than projected. Still, 34 wins seems like a positive mark for a rebuilding squad led by a 19-year-old point guard.
