Over the past several weeks, the Washington Wizards have brought in plenty draft prospects for pre-draft workouts, but many of these NBA hopefuls were projected to go in the second round. Fortunately, since Washington has moved up to the third spot in this upcoming draft, they’ll also have the opportunity to take a close look at many of the top prospects projected to go very high on June 27th.
Nerlens Noel, who will likely hear his name get called first at the Barclays Center in a few weeks, will also be visiting the nation’s capital later this week. According to Michael Lee of the Washington Post, Noel will be visiting Washington on Saturday, but will obviously refrain from physical activity due to his ACL injury which he suffered this past NCAA season. Noel’s draft stock may be slipping, since there were reports of possible red flags dealing with his injury, which might have caused him to visit a few more lottery teams than he would’ve hoped. In these situations, pre-draft interviews can have the same implications as a workout would. In his report, Lee also stated that the Wizards have interest in Kansas’ Ben McLemore, but have yet to set up a workout.
UNLV’s Anthony Bennett and Georgetown’s Otto Porter are also set to meet with the Wizards. Both players are likely the top candidates for Washington in this upcoming draft, so their actions later this week might change the Wizards’ perception of the players. Like Noel, Bennett won’t be able to participate in pre-draft workouts due to a significant shoulder injury. Porter will meet with Washington’s staff on Thursday and will probably participate in multiple workouts at the Verizon Center.
It’s great to finally get a chance to see some of the top prospects work out for the Wizards, especially since draft day is right around the corner. We’ve seen pre-draft workouts and interviews sway teams in the past, and I have no doubt that these preparations will change some teams’ opinions on multiple prospects.
With that said, has your opinion changed on any of the projected picks? Who do you ultimately want to see play in a Wizards uniform next season? Let me know in the comments section.
