After reports surfaced yesterday of Al Harrington’s interest in joining the Washington Wizards for this upcoming season, it seems like the deal is all but inked. According to Michael Lee of the Washington Post, Harrington will be flying arriving to the nation’s capital tomorrow to finalize the situation between the two parties.
According to multiple sources with knowledge of the situation, veteran free agent big man Al Harrington will arrive in Washington on Tuesday for a physical and is “close” to signing a one-year deal for veterans minimum of $1.4 million with the Wizards.
Lee also noted that Harrington, who was waived by the Orlando Magic before becoming a free agent, was considering joining the Chicago Bulls or Los Angeles Clippers before deciding on the Wizards. Even though Harrington is merely a role player, it’s nice to actually have a free agent want to play in Washington. Perhaps having the same agent as John Wall, Martell Webster, and Nene played a part in it, but regardless, Harrington seems “pumped” about joining the Wizards.
Washington’s roster is now maxed out with 15 players (including Harrington) on the team. The Wizards usually leave one roster spot open for flexibility in case of a trade or another free agent acquisition, so it remains to be seen whether or not they’ll make more moves prior to the start of camp. If the Wizards intend to free up some space, I’d suspect either Trevor Booker or Chris Singleton would be involved in any deal.
Even though it’s not yet official, it seems like Harrington will be wearing a Wizards uniform for this upcoming season. The Wizards have been seeking a stretch four and they may have gotten one in Harrington.
