The Washington Wizards will be wrapping up training camp today at George Mason, and now that the NBA Preseason is right around the corner, we’ll continue to look at the match ups prior to the actual games.
Here’s what the Wizards schedule will look like in the coming weeks:
-October 8th at 7:00 PM: The Washington Wizards will get their first chance to match up against the new look Brooklyn Nets at the Verizon Center. Since it’s a glorified exhibition game, I wouldn’t expect the veterans to get much playing time, but it’ll still be interesting seeing Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett perform in a Nets uniform. Of course, the main attraction will likely still be the battle of the point guards. Deron Williams got the best of John Wall during their regular season match up last season, where he knocked down a franchise record 11-three points, including 9 of them in the first half.
-October 12th at 5:00 PM: Washington got a chance to start their training camp process before most of the other teams around the league because they’ll be heading to Rio De Janeiro Brazil on October 12th to meet Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls. Derrick Rose’s return to NBA basketball has been well documented, and even though it’s merely an exhibition game, the match up between the former MVP and John Wall should pack the seats at Nene’s old stomping ground.
-October 15th at 7:00 PM: Even though the Southeast division is considerably weak compared to the other divisions around the NBA, it’s still home to the defending champion Miami Heat. The Wizards will get multiple tries at the Heat during the course of the regular season, but their first opportunity at LeBron James and Co. will be on October 15th.
-October 17th at 7:00 PM: Preseason is always a time where the NBA could take some of it’s most talented players back to where it all started, and the Wizards will get a chance to meet former Baltimorian, Carmelo Anthony, at Baltimore Arena on October 17th. Even though the Bullets (Wizards) were formerly based out of Baltimore, I’m sure Anthony’s appearance will have more significance to the crowd than the Wizards, so I’d expect this to turn into an “away” game pretty quickly.
-October 19th at 7:00 PM: Like the Brooklyn Nets, the New Orleans Pelicans have also revamped their roster quite a bit this offseason, and the Wizards will get to take on the rejuvenated team at Rupp Arena, where both John Wall and Anthony Davis became household names. Both Washington and New Orleans have playoff aspirations and the match ups should be rather intriguing. John Wall will take on All-Star point guard Jrue Holiday, and Bradley Beal will meet Eric Gordon, who was likened to Gordon coming out of college.
-October 22nd at 7:00 PM: Before the Wizards tip-off their regular season on October 30th against the new look Detroit Pistons, they’ll get an opportunity to meet the Josh Smith led group on October 22nd. Both teams have completely changed their rosters from just a few seasons ago, and with a few new acquisitions in Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings, the Wizards will have a lot on their plate.
-October 23rd at 7:00 PM: Former first overall picks, John Wall and Kyrie Irving, will forever be linked with one another and we’ll finally get to witness the match up at preseason. Like many of the other teams I’ve mentioned, the Cavaliers have turned their roster around this offseason, most notably adding injury prone big man, Andrew Bynum. Will Bynum make his triumphant return to basketball during preseason? It’s to be determined.
We’ll be covering every preseason game on Wiz of Awes, so make sure to stay tuned to all the updates and pre/post game analysis.
