According to Marc Stein of ESPN, the Washington Wizards have acquired big man Marcin Gortat from the Phoenix Suns in exchange for Emeka Okafor, who’s out indefinitely.
The Wizards will also send their first round pick in the deal. Phoenix will reportedly also ship Shannon Brown and Kendall Marshall to the nation’s capital. All in all, I think this trade was inevitable, given the fact that Washington’s front line was desperately hurting in Okafor’s absence.
As of right now, Washington’s pick is supposedly unprotected, so that could potentially become in issue further down the line. Wizards general manager and team president, Ernie Grunfeld, likely made this move out of desperation. Washington’s management and coaching staff are essentially under the gun; if they don’t make the post-season for the first time in half a decade, we will definitely see some changes in the organization, starting at the top.
According to Michael Lee of the Washington Post, Shannon Brown, Kendall Marshall and Malcolm lee will NOT be added to the Wizards. Washington’s pick is also top 12 protected, which is HUGE in the Wizards’ case.
We’ll definitely have more as we learn more about the deal.
