The Wizards have battled injuries this entire season, and it continued last night against the San Antonio Spurs where Trevor Ariza strained his hamstring. Washington had a capable replacement for Ariza in rookie Otto Porter, but since both players are out, they’ll have to depend on Martell Webster to pick up the slack. Thankfully for the Wizards, Ariza’s injury isn’t considered serious and he should be back sooner rather than later.
Ariza, who’s in his final season under contract with the Wizards, is averaging nearly 15 points and 7 rebounds per game while shooting a career high 40% from three. He’s really benefited from playing with John Wall who’s helped rejuvenate his play, much like he did with Martell Webster this past season. Even though Ariza is overrated defensively, he’s still considered Washington’s best perimeter defender and it doesn’t hurt that he’s shooting lights out from the corner three.
I honestly didn’t expect Ariza to contribute as much as he has early on this season, but I guess it served as a pleasant surprise. Washington will have to find a way to make up for Ariza’s loss, even if he misses just a few games.
