The Truth, Paul Pierce, is officially a member of the Washington Wizards. The news was announced officially today via a Monumental Network press release, which could be viewed here. Here is a snippet of the release, which includes team president Ernie Grunfeld‘s comments on the acquisition.
We are very happy to welcome Paul to our organization and add his championship experience and history of clutch play to our team,” said Grunfeld. “He will be a good fit alongside our young, dynamic backcourt while his presence and leadership will make a difference for us both on and off the court.
After losing Trevor Ariza to the Houston Rockets via free agency, the team quickly bounced back to add Paul Pierce for a fraction of the cost. Paul Pierce, who will be 37 years old before the opening game next season, is not the same player he used to be, but he will add some offensive versatility to Washington. Paul Pierce averaged close to 14 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists per game last season with the Brooklyn Nets, and although he won’t replicate Trevor Ariza, he will give the Wizards another offensive weapon.
It’s been a long time since the Washington Wizards were able to land proven veteran players, and by acquiring Paul Pierce via free agency, it validates that the team has come a long way since adding John Wall with the first overall pick in 2010. Making a push in the NBA Playoffs, before getting eliminated by the number one seeded Indiana Pacers in the semi-finals, has put the Wizards back on the map, and future Hall-of-Famer Paul Pierce obviously took notice. The Wizards are no longer the laughing stock of the league.
So, with all that said, let’s welcome the Truth, Paul Pierce, to the Washington Wizards.
