Washington Wizards’ John Wall Ranked Fourth Best Point Guard In NBA 2K16

Who’s the best point guard in the NBA? Over the past couple of seasons, Chris Paul has been the undisputed best player at his position. However, we’re in the golden age of point guards. Soon, we’ll likely see a player take Paul’s crown. Luckily for the Washington Wizards, they have a player on their roster who’s capable of doing so in the near future.

John Wall has been steadily climbing the point guard rankings since he entered the league in 2010. After a couple of injury riddled seasons, Wall has become a top guard in the league and certainly in the Eastern Conference.

Last season, Wall had the opportunity to start at point guard for the Eastern Conference All-Star team and he was also named to an All-NBA defensive team.

Most people recognize Wall for his flashy crossovers and 360 layups, but in reality, he’s become much more than the player you regularly see on the highlight reel.

Wall came into the league six seasons ago not knowing how to truly run a team.

He was too fast for his own good, often committing unnecessary turnovers, and didn’t know how to control the tempo of the game.

His jump shot has improved, but perhaps more importantly, he’s taken his feel for the game to the next level.

I remember arguing with folks that believed Wall wasn’t a top-10 point guard just a few seasons ago.

Now, it’s pretty clear that the Eastern Conference’s second best player has become elite at his position.

Recently, NBA 2k released their point guard rankings. Currently (2k updates their player ratings throughout the course of the season) John Wall is tied with Kyrie Irving as the fourth best point guard in the game.

From a pure basketball perspective, I don’t understand how Wall isn’t rated higher than Irving.

First off, defense is a thing. While Irving isn’t a horrid defender, it’s important to note how much better Wall is at that aspect of the game. He’s arguably the best defensive guard in the NBA. He led the Washington Wizards to a top-10 defensive rating after they lost Emeka Okafor and Trevor Ariza last year.

Secondly, John Wall is the best passing point guard in the game. Irving is a capable distributor, but he often dominates the ball and neglects his teammates. I’m not huge on assist numbers, but I remember a handful of games where Irving failed to register a single assist last season. He plays with LeBron James and Kevin Love

The rest of the rankings are pretty solid.

Chris Paul should still be ranked as the best point guard, but I could see why they would put Stephen Curry ahead, just because he had a historic season last year.

Russell Westbrook deserves to be ranked in the top three as well. Besides that, I also think Damian Lillard‘s rating should be lower. The game seems to overvalue scoring, hence why Irving is the same rating as Wall.

Overall, we should be happy with Wall’s ranking in 2k. Being a top-5 point guard in a league that’s dominated by point guards is a legitimate accomplishment.
