Washington Wizards Mailbag Monday: How the Wizards Could Trade For Paul George
By Ben Mehic
Having three undrafted rookies on the roster has affected the Washington Wizards’ depth.
Sheldon McClellan showed some flashes of being a reliable scoring option off the bench, but Scott Brooks hasn’t trusted him enough to give him extended minutes. Daniel Ochefu is a project big man who the Wizards hope can be blessed by Scott Brooks’ development touch. And Danuel House has the potential to be a 3-and-D wing, but a broken wrist has hindered his progress.
As the trade deadline picks up, players with talent will begin to get waived.
Teams that fail to find deals for certain players will opt to waive the players to create room on their rosters.
Tyreke Evans was traded to the Kings in the Boogie deal, but there’s a chance the Kings will buy out the former Rookie of the Year.
Someone like Evans can immediately help the Wizards’ bench. He’s a skilled creator – both for himself and his teammates – and would instantly become Washington’s most talented reserve.
Washington has 15 players under guaranteed contracts, which is the most the NBA allows. So if they want to add Evans (or anyone else, for that matter), they’ll have to say goodbye to a player.
Assuming they keep Marcus Thornton, the next likely candidate to go is House, simply because he hasn’t played this season.
The rookies have sort of just taken up roster spots for the Wizards and their ceilings aren’t particularly high, either.
McClellan has the most intriguing game of all three rookies and could potentially contribute in the future. But House and Ochefu would benefit the most from developing outside of the NBA.
