Delon Wright: Sr., Utah
A juco transfer who was a first-team All-Pac-12 selection in both his seasons at Utah, (and as a guy who watches a lot of Pac-12 basketball for various and stupid reasons, I am OUTRAGED that he didn’t win Player of the Year) Delon Wright was the star for a Utah team that overachieved to a ridiculous degree last year. Wright is one of my favorite players in this draft – quite simply, you will not find a single better defensive guard out there.
Wright is not afraid to throw his body around despite his wiry frame at 6-foot-6, and he has the quickness, length and smarts to guard just about any guard you’ll find.
He’s terrific at reading plays and causes loads of turnovers, and he’s a well above-average rebounder and shotblocker for his position. The thought of Delon Wright and Otto Porter flashing into every single passing lane would give opposing point guards nightmares and cold sweats every single night.
And if that wasn’t enough, Wright is an extremely impactful offensive player. There are very few players in this draft who have Wright’s blend of offense and defense.
His feel for the game is advanced, his offensive repertoire is nuanced, and he’s equally comfortable picking apart teams with his passing or scoring eight different ways at the hoop. And just to wrap things up, Wright improved his 3-point shooting by 13% last year.
Who cares if he’s 23? Delon Wright is a superb basketball player with no obvious weaknesses, and he’s easily my most preferred option on this list.
