Washington Wizards Undrafted Free Agent Round Up
By Ryan Eugene
Washington Wizards’ summer league team is beginning to take form. With the team’s three holdovers from last year, the team is looking to add a number of undrafted free agents to the team, as summer league minicamp is less than a couple of weeks away.
The Wizards summer league schedule kicks off July 8, but the roster had a lot of questions until after the NBA Draft finished. With no draft picks, the team will be composed of entirely undrafted players, and the team has targeted a variety of players.
They signed Villanova forward Kris Jenkins, and now reports have stated the team will also bring in Pittsburgh’s Michael Young, Florida’s Devin Robinson, Gonzaga’s Kevin Pangos, Maalik Wayns, a former Villanova guard, and Central Michigan’s Marcus Keene.
With those six signees, in addition to Wizards’ players Sheldon Mac, Daniel Ochefu, and Chris McCollough, the team suddenly finds itself with nine players rostered. Last year’s summer league roster had 18 players, so we should still expect to see some more noteworthy additions in the future.
Marcus Keene, who averaged 30 points a game last season, should be the most noteworthy among fans, but the other players provided plenty of positive contributions as well.
6’9″ senior forward Michael Young averaged 19.6 PPG, 6.8 RPG, and shot 45% from the field and 34% on threes.
Devin Robinson, a 6’8″ forward, averaged 11 PPG and 6 RPG. He shot 47.5% on field goals, and 39.1% on threes.
Kevin Pangos, from Gonzaga, played abroad the last two seasons, after a four-year career in Spokane. His senior year he was WCC POY, and has played for Herbalife Gran Canaria of the Liga ACB and Žalgiris Kaunas, of the LKL.
Maalik Wayns is the one player who has played in the NBA before. He played 29 games between 2012 and 2014, for the Los Angeles Clippers and the Philadelphia 76ers.
He’s a 6’2″ guard who played collegiately at Villanova, and left after a junior season in which he averaged 17.6 points per game. Post college he joined the Orlando Magic for the Orlando Summer League and the Golden State Warriors for the Las Vegas Summer League in 2012.
He has ties to Washington, having played on the Wizards’ 2014 summer league team, before eventually leaving to play professionally in Lithuania.
