3. Chemistry

There are some new pieces in D.C., and it may take some time for the Wizards to get up to speed and play their best basketball. The new additions bring veteran experience, including plenty of postseason appearances. With that being said, they should be able to shorten the learning curve, but chemistry is always a concern.

Furthermore, there are more mouths to feed this year. Dwight Howard and Austin Rivers require significant touches. Jeff Green will absorb a few, but he’s not so much to be concerned about since he is the ultimate role player.

Howard has been known to have locker room issues and these are largely focused on Howard thinking he’s not receiving enough touches throughout the game. This is the main reason that teams weren’t knocking on his door this past off-season. Hopefully everyone can put aside their egos and make the team their first priority.

We can’t underestimate the importance of chemistry. Practice, training camp, and preseason are great start to get everyone on the same page, but actual games are what matters. Howard had his first practice since September due to his back injury and this has prevented him from developing any type of chemistry with the team.

Washington could get off to a slow start and have to play catch up, which would be worrisome, especially to start the season. If things start to go south, the veterans should be able to refocus the team and get them back on track.
