The Washington Wizards could go many different directions in the draft this summer. With a ton of talent to choose from, here’s why the Wizards should use their lottery pick to draft a point guard.

Going into the 2018-19 season, the Washington Wizards knew they would need to retool just about everywhere this off-season. But they didn’t think they’d need another point guard. Then John Wall got injured. And then he got injured again.

Not many franchises would consider drafting a point guard when they currently have a 28-year-old, 5x all-star running the point and under contract through 2022-23. But the Wizards are in an unusual situation.

Assuming Dwight Howard opts into his player option and the team opts out of theirs with Jabari Parker, nine players on the Wizards’ final game roster will be hitting free agency. Simply put, they need a little bit of everything. But as always, some things need to be prioritized over others.

As the WIzards search for a new GM, it’s tough to know exactly what direction they’re going to be going this off-season. Tommy Sheppard has made a few moves in his time as the man in charge (waiving Wesley Johnson, signing Jordan MacRae and Tarki Phillip), but nothing to truly move the needle yet. There’s no telling if he’ll even still be calling the shots come draft night.

Regardless of who they end up hiring to replace Ernie Grunfeld, though, the Wizards will need to address numerous roster deficiencies. Depending on how the lottery balls bounce, the Wizards should make point guard a top priority on draft night.
