Final Verdict

The Washington Wizards would have been better off if Dwight Howard never had a player option to opt in or out of in the first place. A one-year experiment  would have been best, but hindsight is always 20/20.

For now, they’re stuck with him. But maybe not for long.

The man who orchestrated the Howard deal is gone. Whoever the Wizards end up bringing in to replace Ernie Grunfeld could get creative with Howard’s contract and either waive or trade him. The Wizards don’t have many assets to offer though, so they probably wouldn’t be able to find a worthwhile trade partner.

Considering that Howard was bought out of a $23.5M contract just last year, there’s a good chance there’s still a buyout market for him. It really only takes one interested team. Stranger things have happened.
