Washington Wizards: 3 Things to Know About GM Candidate Danny Ferry
By Ethan Smith
Thanks, But No Thanks
Seeing your interviewee’s name pop up on another team’s shortlist is usually a good sign of your candidate’s competence. If other teams want them, too, you’re probably on the right track. If nobody else seems interested, it might be worth asking ‘why?’
Besides the opening in Washington, the front office vacancy left by Dell Demps in New Orleans was probably the next most attractive position available around the league. Ferry, who had served as special advisor to Demps, acted as the interim GM until New Orleans finally hired David Griffin. Ferry, as well as Washington’s Tommy Sheppard, was among those interviewed to replace Demps. Obviously, he didn’t get the job. Neither did Sheppard.
While it’s a good sign that the Pelicans trusted Ferry enough to hire him as an advisor and keep him on as an interim GM, the fact that they did not decide to promote him to a permanent GM role is troubling. Ferry presumably had months more than any other candidate to impress the decision makers in New Orleans. Unfortunately, he didn’t do enough to win them over and they went in another direction.
