Rapport With the Coach

Bad news for the Washington Wizards fans clamoring for a new coach. And good news for the Scott Brooks fans out there. If Troy Weaver is the team’s next GM, Brooks will probably be afforded at least the time remaining on his contract.

Scott Brooks had a hot start as the Wizards head coach, going 49-33 (the team’s most wins since 1974-75) and pushing the Boston Celtics to game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. In the two seasons since fans have soured on Brooks, citing a lack of progress and frustrating player rotations.

Brooks’ best seasons as an NBA head coach came in Oklahoma City while Weaver was the team’s Vice President/Assistant GM. Just because they have a history together doesn’t necessarily guarantee Brooks his safety forever. But having a familiar face would definitely be helpful.

The general manager and the coach responsibilities are fairly intertwined, with some teams recently opting to give their coaches GM power as well, although those experiments haven’t gone too well. At the very least, the two have to be on the same page. Brooks and Weaver proved they can at least do that during their time together in Oklahoma City.

As a first-time GM with a new franchise, Weaver will likely welcome all the additional help he can get. Knowing he has an ally in his head coach, at least in the beginning, will be huge for him.
