2019 NBA Draft Profile: Kevin Porter Jr.
By Ethan Smith
Draft or Pass
Pass, unless the Wizards decide to trade up or buy in. At nine, the Wizards can find players that does what Porter does, and more.
However, if the Wizards can somehow finagle a way to get additional late firs-rounders or second-round picks, then Porter makes a lot of sense. He’s the explosive type of guard the Wizards could use to help Bradley Beal and (eventually) John Wall when he returns to action.
He’s aggressive. He’s explosive. And he can get. a. bucket. Period. Bench scoring is vital and having a guy with a nose for the basket like Porter could be invaluable for a team that often struggled to find scoring from anyone not named Bradley Beal.
Porter’s ball handling ability also would allow him to thrive as a complementary piece in the backcourt beside either Wall or Beal. Instead of simply being the second-unit scoring threat, he could add an additional dimension to the Wizards’ offense when placed next to one of the team’s two all-star guards.
While the Wizards are still yet to bring in and work out a prospect that makes sense at #9 (they’ve hosted Sekou Doumbouya, but only for an interview. no workout), Porter is certainly closer to the top than many of the other guys that have shown up to Wizards pre-draft activities. Still, that doesn’t make him the right fit.
