5 Guards the Washington Wizards Could Target in Free Agency
By Ethan Smith
Isaiah Thomas
It has been a tough couple of yeard for Isaiah Thomas. After setting the NBA on fire with the Boston Celtics during the 2016-17 season, Thomas has struggled to find the same form since a hip injury that prematurely ended his playoff run that season.
With John Wall‘s injury guaranteed to keep him out of the rotation for a while, the Wizards have a unique opportunity to offer a free agent point guard some legitimate playing time, possibly as a starter. There might not be a player better suited, or hungrier, for that type of an opportunity.
Thomas will be the first one to tell you he is more than ready to get back to his MVP form, the same form that helped him average over 28 points per game in 2016. But the numbers do not quite represent a player that can still do that. After decent stints with both the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers, Thomas played in just 12 games for the Denver Nuggets last season.
Thomas could be a serviceable offensive option for the Wizards and certainly would not break the bank. However, his defensive deficiencies are too glaring to overlook, and the Wizards are not a strong defensive team that can hide a player like Thomas. Plus, could we cheer for the guy that ended the Wizards 2017 playoff run with a 29-point, 12-assist performance?
