Davis Bertans: Latvian Laser

Davis Bertans is the latest offseason acquisition for the Washington Wizards, and if that move marks the end of their free agency activity, they certainly saved the best nickname for last.

Bertans, a former San Antonio Spur, is aptly nicknamed “Latvian Laser”. For one, the 26-year-old forward is from Latvia. Plus, he can spray from outside. Last season, Bertans shot 42.9 percent from behind the arc, attempting 4.4 three-pointers a game. For his entire three-year career, Bertans has averaged 40.4 percent from outside.

With Bertans, the Wizards aren’t just adding an awesome nickname. They’re adding a much-needed stretch four. They’re adding a very disciplined forward, one that’s averaged less than 1.5 turnovers per game per 36 minutes during each of his first three seasons. They’re adding the Latvian Laser, people! If that nickname in itself doesn’t get you excited, I don’t know what will.

Bertans joins Thomas Bryant and Mo Wagner in a frontcourt that has improved its outside shooting tremendously since last season. Without much to work with, Tommy Sheppard’s turned last year’s crowded and confusing frontcourt into one that can stretch the floor. Spacing is vital, and it shouldn’t be a problem with guys like the Latvian Laser out there.
