Do we like the Lakers?

No team (for better or for worse) has dominated the offseason headlines like the Los Angeles Lakers have. One move of theirs that didn’t get much attention though, was their dealing of Moritz Wagner, Isaac Bonga, and Jemerrio Jones to the Washington Wizards as part of the Anthony Davis trade with the New Orleans Pelicans.

The three former Lakers weren’t available for the team’s first Summer League game in Las Vegas, but Moritz has played in the past two games and Bonga got some minutes in their last contest, a loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Summer League is far from an accurate barometer of what these players will look like in the league. It gives us a glimpse, but by no means will the results of these July games determine the trajectory of anyone on the floor.

However, we still want to see some promise, especially from guys we hope or assume will be on the regular season roster. Wagner admittedly struggled in his first Summer League game as a Wizard but improved in his second game. His post-offense is suspect, but that’s not why the Wizards brought him in. Wagner can stretch the floor and attack off the dribble, something he did a lot of on his way to a six-for-seven night from the free throw line. Wagner hasn’t wowed yet, but hopefully, he can at least continue to improve in game three.

Bonga and Jones have only seen the floor in one game as Wizards, but both were quick contributors. Bonga tallied some quick buckets with seven points in 16 minutes, while Jones did his work on the glass. He had five rebounds in just four minutes of playing time.
