4 buyout candidates the Washington Wizards should target
By Keith Cork
Bobby Portis
Position: Power Forward/Center
Age: 24
Look, even I don’t know what the New York Knicks are doing. But the fact remains that they spent an inordinate amount of their time this past offseason signing power forwards.
With the ouster of Knicks president Steve Mills, the Knicks seem to be walking those terrible decisions back by trading away Marcus Morris and now rumblings that they are attempting to buyout Bobby Portis.
The logjam and general disarray of the Knicks has done Bobby P no favors, seeing him average only 20.9 minutes and 9.4 points per game, though he did manage to get some sweet, sweet revenge on his former team the Chicago Bulls this season.
Portis is yet another big that can step out and nail the three-point shot, but he also brings a toughness and tenacity that would help this Wizards team in practices as much as in games. He really is an unexplored talent and I wouldn’t mind the Washington Wizards giving up their bi-annual exception (BAE) to get him this season and try to lock him down long-term.
In his best season with the Bulls in 2017-18, he was only able to see the floor for 22.5 minutes per contest because of yet another logjam. In those limited minutes, though, he put up per 36 numbers of 21.1 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.1 steals, and 47/36/77 shooting splits. Those are actually low-key elite numbers.
As I was writing this, the New York Post published an article that refuted the rumors that Bobby Portis was seeking a buyout. But the NBA is wild, yo, so ya never know!
