The All-Star Snub

Zach LaVine

This is the wrong All-Star Weekend competition for Zach LaVine. After his otherworldly performance in the 2016 Slam Dunk Contest, fans have clamored for LaVine to return. But we haven’t seen it yet. LaVine, himself, claimed he would give the fans another show if (and only if) he was selected as an All-Star. Well, LaVine is still searching for his first All-Star Game honor and will be chucking up shots in the three-point contest. Not throwing down dunks.

But even if we’d prefer for LaVine to be in the dunk contest, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t belong in the three-point contest. Over the past few seasons, LaVine’s offensive arsenal has evolved. He’s gone from being just an uber-athletic leaper to having one of the more lethal all-around offensive games. And it all starts with the three-point shot. This season, LaVine is sixth in the NBA in three-point attempts.

Wizards fans, especially, should be uniquely familiar with LaVine’s long-range abilities. In his three games vs Washington this season, LaVine is averaging 31.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 5.3 assists while shooting 50 percent from three and 51 percent from the field.

LaVine may have made his name in the NBA as one of the most exciting dunkers, but he’s slowly shifting the narrative. Nothing would help establish him as more than just a dunker like a three-point contest title.
