Washington Wizards: 5 biggest storylines to watch after the all-star break
By Keith Cork
4. Will Scott Brooks be back?
It’s not an exact science, but Scott Brooks has possibly done less with more talent than any other coach in the NBA. With the Washington Wizards, a perennial top 4 team in the Eastern Conference of the NBA when healthy, Brooks has managed a 144-155 record over four seasons.
That’s good enough for a 48.2 percent win rate, which is absolutely awful. Some of that can be attributed to injuries and roster management beyond his control, but for the most part he has underwhelmed since coming over from Oklahoma City.
Do we think Scott Brooks is the long-term answer? When Wizard of Awes writer Jack Skolnik attempted to answer that in his weekly Monday Mailbag, he suggested Becky Hammon and Mark Jackson, which were interesting.
Scotty Brooks almost feels like a holdover from the Ernie Grunfeld days at this point, so I’m not sure who is lobbying for his job. Most coaches in the NBA move on pretty quickly, or more accurately the franchise moves on from them, and there’s not much special about Brooks to hold onto him.
A fresh face may do us wonders, and I’d put my money on it happening. The question is, will it happen sooner or later? During the season or the offseason?
This is a storyline to watch, and if the Wizards fall further and further out of the playoff hunt, we may get a midseason coaching change yet, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
