Marcin Gortat’s top 5 plays with the Washington Wizards
By Keith Cork
4. Marcin Gortat posterizes half the Atlanta Hawks team.
What a hammer! The slam off the lob was one of the ways Gortat scored most, shooting 57.6 percent in plays where he was the pick-and-roll roll man, per NBA.com. He also had one of the highest team scoring frequencies when he was the roll man, his team scoring on 56.2 percent of all plays when he was the screener and rolled.
It was important as the Wizards sat at 11th in the league in pick-and-roll with the ball handler, who was mostly John Wall and, less frequently, Bradley Beal. They ran the action on 17.9 percent of their plays.
They were tied for 12th that season in points per pick too, with 0.85.
Gortat poured in 14 points on 64 percent shooting and pulled down 10 rebounds, one of his 36 double doubles on the season. The Washington Wizards won 114-107, and Gortat even secured two blocks against the opposing center and former teammate Dwight Howard.
It’s true, many forget that Gortat played behind Howard in Orlando to begin his career. Gortat was selected 57th overall in the draft, well into the second round by the Phoenix Suns in the 2005 draft. He wouldn’t make his debut until the 2007-08 Orlando Magic gave him a shot.
