Patrick Williams: Weaknesses

Patrick Williams has the frame and the defensive ability to be labeled a ‘3&D’ wing, but he can’t truly claim that title, yet. He still lacks the all-important three-point shot. At Florida State, Williams struggled from three, shooting 32 percent on 1.7 attempts per game. He was a solid free-throw shooter (83.8 percent), and his midrange game is confident and fluid. So there’s reason to believe he can develop an outside shot. For now, though, he’s not a threat to stretch the floor.

In addition to adding a three-point shot, Williams needs to be more aggressive on the offensive end. There’s no reason Williams — with all of his athleticism and offensive ability — should have averaged less than 10 points per game, even on a loaded FSU team, especially when his unselfish play didn’t necessarily translate. Williams averaged more turnovers than assists (1.7 to 1.0 per game) as a freshman. While he needs to be more aggressive on offense, he also needs to be more disciplined. He finished his freshman season averaging 4.4 turnovers per 100 possessions.

Williams could use some of that discipline on the defensive end, too. Overall, Williams is a great defender. But he tends to gamble in passing lanes, which often leads to easy buckets for the other team when he can’t come up with the steal. Although he did average one steal each game while at FSU, his gambling hurt his team more than it helped them.
