Free Agency Miss #1: Kriss Dunn

On the second day of free agency, the Wizards signed Raul Neto, adding point guard depth amidst the John Wall trade rumors. However, Neto wasn’t the point guard the Wizards should have been targeting. Instead, they should have gone after former Chicago Bull Kriss Dunn. But Dunn ended up being one of the many free-agent additions to a suddenly-loaded Atlanta Hawks team.

Dunn’s deal with the Hawks, worth $5 million/year, is more expensive than the veterans minimum that the Wizards will reportedly be paying Neto. It’s also a longer deal. Neto’s deal with D.C. is only for one season. However, committing more money and more time to Dunn would have been worth it.

Dunn is one of the best defenders in the league, and the Wizards haven’t exactly addressed their defensive issues yet this offseason. They were one of the NBA’s worst defensive teams last season and gave up 119.1 points per game. The Wizards could use all the help they could get along the perimeter, and Dunn would have been one of, if not the, best defenders on the team from the moment he signed.

Dunn would have added all the point guard depth the Wizards get from Neto while also adding a stout defensive presence on a roster that desperately needs ones.
