Washington Wizards: 3 Former Wizards who could really help right now
By Ethan Smith
We’ve hit the halfway point of the season, and it’s been a roller coaster of a first half. Fortunately, the Washington Wizards have seemingly smoothed out after an incredibly rocky start. The Wizards enter the All-Star break with an 8-3 record over their last 11 games and a 10-8 record since the start of February. Their 0.555 winning percentage since February 1 would place the Wizards fourth in the East had they been maintaining that since the start of the season.
However, don’t let recent success blind you from the fact that this Wizards team has more than a few holes. They’re 12th in the standings at the All-Star break. Wins over the Brooklyn Nets, Denver Nuggets, and Los Angeles Lakers suggest they can compete with anybody. However, in the last month, they also have double-digit losses to the Memphis Grizzlies, LA Clippers, New York Knicks, and Toronto Raptors. They’re far from perfect and could definitely use some help.
Here are three former Washington Wizards that could really help out right now.
Kelly Oubre
Years as a Washington Wizard: 2015-18 (252 games)
Current Team: Golden State Warriors
The Washington Wizards are weak on the wing. Whether they’re trotting out Isaac Bonga, Garrison Mathews, or Deni Avdija, the Wizards are usually outmatched on that end. Bonga brings a great defensive presence, but his offense is lacking (if there at all). Avdija shows his sky-high potential but is still a bit green, and the rookie mistakes aren’t hard to miss. Mathews, who has recently been a mainstay of the starting lineup despite being a two-way player, is their best option. However, he still leaves a lot to be desired from that position in every category besides three-point shooting and hustle.
Not long ago, the Wizards had a rangy wing, loved by fans, that would be a great fit alongside Bradley Beal and Russell Westbrook; Kelly Oubre.
Oubre has a little bit of everything that the Wizards need on the wing. He’s a solid defender that can switch between forwards and guards with relative ease. And the streaky three-point shooting that plagued him a bit while with Washington seems to be gone. Last season, he shot a career-high 35.2 percent from three with the Phoenix Suns. And lately, he’s been even better.
Through 35 games this season, Oubre is averaging 15.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. However, in February — during his last 15 games before the All-Star break — he’s been on another level: 20.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.0 steals while shooting 43.0 percent from three. That shooting could really help the Wizards out. They currently rank 28th in three-point percentage (34.4).
