Deni Avdija’s Top 3 Games: 128-124 loss to the Miami Heat

It may have come in a loss, but Avdija’s highest-scoring game of the year was still a sight to behold! For someone who often lacked aggression on the offensive end, he sure took advantage of Bradley Beal and Russell Westbrook both taking the night off. With the Wizards’ two superstars out, Avdija took a season-high 15 shot attempts en route to a career-high 20 points with five rebounds and five assists. So far this season, only six other rookies have recorded a game with at least 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists.

From the opening tip, Avdija made it a point of emphasis to put his stamp on the game. Scott Brooks used him mainly as a spot-up shooter throughout the year, and he proved he can catch fire from deep when in rhythm by going 4-9 from beyond the arc. But he’s capable of much more and showed that against the Heat.

When Beal and Westbrook are on the court, they’re the primary ball-handlers so Avdija doesn’t have many opportunities to create offense for himself or others. However, in only his tenth NBA game, Avdija provided the Washington Wizards with a glimpse of how bright the future can be if he’s given more touches. By no means is he ready to run the offense but he should definitely be given the freedom to be a playmaker.

Unless something changes, Deni will finish the year ranked fifth in rebounding among all rookies( 4.9 per game). He attacks the glass with reckless abandon and is great in the open court with or without the ball in his hands. His hustle and effort are there. As long as his offensive arsenal continues to grow, he’ll be fine moving forward.
