Wizards 2022 Free Agent: Anthony Gill

  • Anthony Gill returns to the Wizards on a team-friendly contract

Anthony Gill isn’t going to make very many highlight reels. The Wizards tendered him a qualifying offer and it’s fair to assume as long as both Gill and the Wizards are open to it, they’ll work out a deal at some point in free agency.

The forward makes a lot of hustle plays and is highly regarded in the locker room. If the Wizards keep a spot on the roster open as free agency progresses, after addressing other needs, I expect Gill to be brought back. It won’t cost much and he won’t need nightly minutes, but he is a positive presence and can fill in solidly when needed in the frontcourt.

Gill appeared in 44 games last season for the Wizards, averaging 4.1 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. He’s a great fit at the end of the bench due to his locker room presence and ability to give 10-15 minutes of hustle play on any given night.

There is also the chance he returns overseas if he feels that is best for his basketball career. At this point, he knows he isn’t going to get a substantial role in the NBA and if he desires more you could see Gill head back to the EuroLeague this offseason.

If he wants to stay in the NBA, the WIzards can slow play signing any deal with him and wait until they have the rest of their roster sorted out. That way they know they’ve addressed more pressing issues like big man depth and guard depth before bringing back a player like Gill.

Once things get moving in free agency, it would be understandable to see the two sides agree to a short-term deal right around the veteran minimum. If Washington suddenly doesn’t have the roster space and rescinds their QO, a number of other teams may jump in for the added depth and effort Gill brings to the table.

Other Possibilities: EuroLeague, Knicks, Clippers
