Wizards that Dominated the NBA Summer League – Kyle Kuzma, 2017-18

Kyle Kuzma is the lone player on the list that did it as a member of another organization. It was with the Los Angeles Lakers summer league roster in 2017-18 that Kuz seemingly took the basketball world by storm.

There were rumblings about him going in but it was easy to assume that was about the Lakers hype machine more than anything else. How quickly we learned those rumblings were well warranted and the Lakers had an absolute steal on their hands.

While Kuz eventually won the Summer League Championship MVP at the conclusion of the tournament, he was already well on his way to a dominant showing before that game tipped off. In seven games played, Kuzma took on the role of top scoring threat for the Lakers once Brandon Ingram was shut down for the summer.

He went on to average 21.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists and over a steal and a block per game. Not only did Kuzma shoot an impressive 51.4 percent from the field, but he also shot a scorching 48 percent from behind the arc.

It was clear he was a step ahead of most guys in the summer showcase which is extremely rare for a rookie, even if that rookie was a multiple-year collegiate player. Kuzma was a step ahead of most and made an impact on winning for his team, which added a lot of pressure early in his Lakers career.

We all saw how he bounced back when he joined the Wizards this past season. The turmoil and struggles of playing in LA and eventually alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis seemed to impact his numbers big time. This past season he was back to the game changer he showed flashes of becoming all the way back in the 2017-18 NBA Summer League.
