The 2022 NBA 2k23 Summer League is officially wrapped up. The Portland Trail Blazers won the championship after defeating the New York Knicks on Sunday afternoon. The Washington Wizards also concluded play on Sunday, closing out their five-game slate with a 87-77 victory over the Golden State Warriors.
Multiple key players were unavailable for Washington in their final game yet they pulled it together and got the last win to conclude play with a record of 3-2. That being said, we all know Summer League isn’t necessarily about the team results.
While team results can be great and a representation of how the individuals on the roster played, those things don’t always add up quite so easily. Like many teams, the Wizards were more focused on getting a look at some of the key young talent they had in Las Vegas than getting wins.
Unfortunately, things didn’t go great for Washington from an evaluation standpoint. Missed games, poor performances and uninspiring outings were common among some of the most important players the Wizards sent to the summer league.
Both fans and the front office can’t be too thrilled with the overall performances we saw from important prospects. For some of these guys, this could literally not matter at all in the grand scheme of things. It’s a small sample size, in a modified pickup style environment with players across the board trying to show what they can do.
Summer league isn’t made for every player. Not only that, but some guys are more built for the tournament-style summer showcase than the actual NBA game. It happens every year.
This isn’t the end of these prospects in any way. For some, we remain extremely confident they’ll become impact players sooner than later. That doesn’t take away from the fact that they disappointed during the NBA 2k23 Summer League.
