The Washington Wizards do not currently have the ability to sign a veteran free agent guard to a standard contract. Things can change quickly in the the NBA, though, and if the Wizards want to create a roster spot they could do so in a variety of ways.
It will all come down to their desire or lack thereof to create a spot. If they see a hole on the roster worth filling, and talent on the market to fill it, they will absolutely get creative and open the spot. The question for speculating becomes, what could the hole needing to be filled be?
One area that stands out remains point guard. Despite making two very solid additions (at worst) to the position, there still seems to be room for the right kind of player. Monte Morris and Delon Wright make for a significantly improved point guard rotation than last year.
That being said, the team as a whole could benefit from players with certain skillsets. a few of those skillsets can be found in guards. More specifically, a few of those skillsets can be found in guards that remain NBA free agents.
With Wright being 6’5”, he has enough size to play more of a ‘shooting guard’ role defensively if and when needed. Morris is a bit smaller, but both players are versatile enough offensively to play alongside a number of different players in the backcourt.
