Now that NBA teams are able to sign players to ten-day contract again, there are plenty of players that should be on the radar for the Washington Wizards. Near the top of that list should be reuniting with Greg Monroe. He would complement their new big man look wonderfully.

In his prime, Monroe was worth around 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Detroit Pistons. He was never an elite player, but he always contributed to the success of the team in a number of ways.

Unfortunately, he was one of many great centers of the time to see an immediate drop in production following the rise of the Golden State Warriors and the three-point shot. He never fully adjusted to the new pace and space style of play that many teams like to play.

Of course, he’s a good rebounder as he stands at just shy of seven feet tall. This also allows him to challenge and change shot attempts even if he can’t quite block them. He only averages 0.6 blocks for his careers, but the more advanced stats such as per 36-minute stats and his defensive win shares point to him being a solid defender.

Last season he was great with the Minnesota Timberwolves, picking up much of the slack during a time where their center depth was very thinned out. He put up big numbers and was an overall positive force for the team.

Greg Monroe’s strengths perfectly lineup with the Washington Wizards’ weaknesses.

His rebounding and ability to protect the rim and rebound could be valuable to this Washington Wizards team as that is something they sorely lack. Outside of Kristaps Porzingis and Daniel Gafford, there are no great rebounders on the roster.

Experimenting with Monroe on the bench behind Gafford could provide valuable for the team that consistently allows ridiculous amounts of point in the paint. He would definitely be an upgrade over Taj Gibson in rim protection.

Worst case scenario, he doesn’t work out and they can let him go after the ten days are up. This is an idea that could really improve the team.

If the Washington Wizards are able to experiment with Greg Monroe off their bench, they could unlock a new level of play from their reserves. This may just be the best choice among all available free agents.
