According to Shams Charania and The Athletic, the Washington Wizards are looking to possibly trade Chris Paul to a third team. Reports have the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Clippers were trying to make a move to acquire CP3 from the Phoenix Suns prior to the Wizards trade went down.

Paul, who is still an elite facilitator and player, even in his advanced age can provide a much-needed lift to a team looking to make a title run. If the Wizards decide to contact the Clippers or Warriors for Chris Paul centered deal, it can serve as an interesting opportunity to acquire some assets and young talent.

What would a trade sending Chris Paul from the Wizards to the Clippers look like?

The Clippers have a young guard on their bench that can immediately start on this Wizards team that’s looking to find pieces to rebuild around, Bones Hyland. Hyland is a young guard who was drafted by the Denver Nuggets but was looking for a bigger role and dealt to the Clippers during the trade deadline.

He did not see much time with his new ball club. The Clippers were trying to figure out a rotation for Russell Westbrook and Eric Gordon, two players acquired in the second half of the season, as well as other guards on the roster. But Bones did show flashes of stardom during his short tenure with the Nuggets.

The Clippers have proven that they are willing to play ball with the Wizards as they nearly agreed to a deal featuring the Boston Celtics and Malcolm Brogdon. They did eventually back out due to the questionable health of the Celtics point guard.

They could use the return they were willing to give up for Brogdon as the framework to put together the framework for a trade featuring CP3.

What about a trade between the Wizards and the Warriors?

The Warriors have more attractive prospects. The idea of acquiring Jordan Poole or Jonathan Kuminga can be very attractive for the Wizards. There have been rumors that swirling that Poole and Kuminga could be traded as Mike Dunleavy Jr. is looking to make his mark as the new general manager of Golden State.

Despite being key pieces to the Warriors’ 2022 title, a vet like Chris Paul can be a good swap. Warriors would dodge Poole’s giant contract, use that money to retain Draymond Green who recently declined his player option, and cut Paul after this year due to his non-guaranteed final year if need be.

Draymond and Poole have not been the same since their incident prior to the start of the season, so this can be an ideal scenario for both parties involved. Paul can get another shot at the elusive ring he’s missing from his resume. Poole or Kuminga will get a chance to be a go to guy on a rebuilding team and the Green and Poole chemistry issues would be solved.

Wizards would be getting a 20 points per game scorer in Jordan Poole who’s only getting better and I’m sure he’s eager to prove he can be the man in an offense centered around him. Having just turned 24, the sky is the limit for him.

Kuminga is even younger at 20 years of age. Having younger, more athletic legs, he has the potential to become a star as well. Either player can serve as a great rebuilding block going forward.

Chris Paul will likely never suit up for the Washington Wizards, so they have all offseason to find the right trade package to get for him en route to their rebuild. It doesn’t have to be a quick move. Rome was not built in a day. Take time to visit every scenario and find the best solution for both the team and also CP3.
