After a full season of speculation surrounding whether or not the Washington Wizards would keep Kyle Kuzma, we are finally going to see the answer soon. We could all be surprised by his decision as well.
This year saw Kuzma finally break out into the star that many thought he would be in his rookie season, averaging 21.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game. While he may not be the most efficient scorer in the league, he made up for it by burying tough buckets and being a quality defender.
Many believed he should have been traded at last season’s trade deadline due to his high value contract and the fact that he is a legit third option for a championship team. However, the previous front office administration decided to hold onto the star in hopes that he would re-sign with the team.
With how the market is looking, they may not have been that wrong about keeping Kuzma.
The money for Kyle Kuzma is with the Washington Wizards
It has been well documented that Kyle Kuzma is looking for a payday this offseason. It’s no secret. His play took a huge step forward and he has earned his keep. He has also made it clear that he wants to play for a winning team.
However, with the new CBA cracking down on high spending teams, it may be difficult for him to get both of his wishes. There aren’t many teams who are both in a situation to win and have the cap space to sign Kuzma without passing the first or even the second apron.
The teams who can do both all seem far more interested in other players like Draymond Green, Kyrie Irving, or Fred VanVleet. All of whom have accomplished more in their careers than Kuzma.
If the 27-year-old wants to cash in on his All-Star caliber season, he would want to sign with the Wizards as they have the ability to give him a huge check for the next few seasons. Considering the fact that he is a fan favorite of the Wizards, Kyle Kuzma staying is very much still in the realm of possibility.
While this may hinder the tank to start next season, they can flip the star at the trade deadline to generate a higher return than what the team received for either Kristaps Porzingis or Bradley Beal.
Kyle Kuzma should prioritize maximizing his career earnings this season and to do so, he will almost have to sign with the Washington Wizards. Honestly, seeing Jordan Poole and Kyle Kuzma share the floor together would be exciting.
