Now that the Washington Wizards have officially entered a rebuild, they have the ability to pick up players that much of the league has already given up on. They can sign these players to small contracts and end up with huge value should they pan out when given a new role.
We have seen rebuilding teams do this plenty recently, but none have stood out more than the Detroit Pistons. They have taken a chance on a wide array of top picks needing another shot and have found some notable success.
Marvin Bagley III went from looking like he was a season away from being out of the league to now he could be a solid bench player on a quality team. James Wiseman went from hardly playing on the Golden State Warriors to now he looks like a real building block for this Pistons team going forward.
The Wizards should look to replicate that success by taking chances in free agency this offseason. There is already one player available who stands out as a potential Wizard.
The Washington Wizards should roll the dice on Cam Reddish
Cam Reddish was once viewed as a potential top-three pick ahead of the 2018-’19 season as he was a major player in high school and fans loved the story of a single team having each of the top three picks.
However, as the season progressed, Reddish struggled to find his footing. While he did show flashes of the greatness many expected of him, he also showed some concerns. This caused him to fall all the way to ninth in the draft.
In his first few years in the NBA, he has yet to find a home and has continuously been in situations where he is glued to the bench with no opportunities to create opportunities with the ball. This has stunted his development.
However, should he be given an opportunity with a rebuilding franchise, like the Washington Wizards, he could discover the potential many saw in him. This is only part of the reason why the Wiz should give him a shot. He is also already viewed as a potential target.
There are a few more reasons why they should give the young man a shot.
