Bench: Delon Wright

Delon Wright may not fit the timeline of the 2023-24 Washington Wizards. He is 31 years old and is on an expiring contract. Yet, he is exactly the type of veteran presence a young, rebuilding team needs.

Last season, Wright had one of the most underrated seasons by any Wizard in recent years. It may be hard to believe, but the Wizards actually had a winning record in the games Wright played last season, going 26-24. With his defense, hustle, and leadership, his positive impact on and off the court is undeniable.

This is why he presumably has suitors. He is on a team-friendly deal, he is easily acquirable, and he could help most teams in the league. So, there is a decent chance he is the one who gets moved before the season opener.

Yet, it wouldn’t be the worst idea to hold on to Wright until the trade deadline. He works perfectly in bench units but can also slide in next to Jordan Poole and complement him with his defense. He can guard multiple positions, make defensive plays, and help organize the team on both ends of the floor. A young, inexperienced team like the Wizards could really use that.

Furthermore, there is plenty that Bilal Coulibaly and Johnny Davis can learn from Wright. His mentorship may be his most important skill. As a player with limited shooting and scoring ability, Wright successfully carved out a role for himself in the NBA with his tenacity. That could provide a blueprint for the young Wizards.

Any team in the NBA can use Delon Wright on their bench, and the Washington Wizards are no different. It would be understandable to move on from him due to his age, but keeping him around for a little longer could do wonders for this team.
