We are less than two months away from the start of the 2023-24 NBA season. But perhaps more importantly for the Washington Wizards, the 2024 NBA Draft is less than ten months away. For the Wizards, who are embarking on a developmental season, their draft pick in next year’s draft is significantly more impactful for their future than whatever happens during the season. Therefore, it will be fascinating to track the prospects in the draft class, as well as the lottery odds. The latest mock draft by Jonathan Wasserman of Bleacher Report is kind to the Washington Wizards as they land Ron Holland with the no. 1 overall pick.

Ron Holland is a 6’8 wing who plays for G League Ignite. According to Wasserman, his “mix of 6’8″ size, athleticism, offensive versatility, defensive impact, and signature motor” makes him a fascinating option for a lot of teams at the top of the draft. The Wizards, who need as much athleticism and upside as possible, would also be thrilled to land Holland in the 2024 NBA Draft.

Holland has the mold of a superstar player worthy of being the no. 1 pick. It is obviously way too early in the process and there will be plenty of changes in mock drafts, but if Holland continues to improve his jump shot, he will have the inside track to the no. 1 pick. There simply aren’t too many 6’8 wings with athleticism, playmaking, and two-way potential in the league.

Wasserman says the following on Holland:

"Holland has a chance to separate himself from the pack if he continues to build on his flashes of creation, passing and shot-making. He’s at his best attacking, turning the corner and using footwork off the dribble to get to the rim."

That sounds like the type of player Washington desperately needs.

However, it’s important to remember that for a team like the Wizards, who are in the early stages of rebuilding, going for the highest upside regardless of the fit or positional needs is important. Whether it’s Holland or someone else like Matas Buzelis, the Wizards’ draft pick will be a huge part of their future. Let’s hope the new front office nails it.
