JJ Redick knows a thing or two about shooting. He is 5th all-time in three-point shooting percentage with an impressive 41.5% for his career. Naturally, having his stamp of approval would mean a lot to any shooter, including Corey Kispert of the Washington Wizards.
In the latest episode of his podcast The Old Man & the Three, hosts JJ Redick and Tommy Alter had the Brooklyn Nets forward Cam Johnson on as a guest. After a fascinating hour-long discussion that touched on Team USA, Johnson’s Phoenix days, and shooting forms, Redick’s co-host Alter asked whether there were any young players in the league who projected to be elite, versatile shooters but weren’t quite there yet. The player singled out by Redick was none other than Corey Kispert.
"“I actually really enjoyed watching him play last season. He could really shoot the **** out of the ball, but I really enjoyed him off-the-ball, his cutting, and the deception.”"
This highlights something the Wizards fans already knew; that Corey Kispert is one of the most underrated offensive players in the league. He has flown under the radar due to back-to-back underwhelming seasons by the Wizards, but it’s nice to see him get the appreciation he deserves from an elite role player like JJ Redick.
Redick ended his remarks on Kispert, stating, “I think he is going to have a really good career. I’m excited to see him develop,” while Cam Johnson nodded in agreement.
There are plenty of things Kispert can learn from Redick as well. Despite being undersized and underathletic, Redick found a way to contribute at a high level to plenty of playoff teams. His off-ball movement, versatility to his shot, and quick release allowed him to shoot a remarkably high volume and accuracy. Kispert could add some of these elements to his game to take the next step into being one of the most feared sharpshooters in the league.
But for now, having JJ Redick’s endorsement is a good start.
Coach Unseld Jr. is expecting a big leap from Kispert and Avdija
The Washington Wizards head coach Wes Unseld Jr. is high on Corey Kispert and Deni Avdija. This could change the future of the franchise.
