Utah Jazz receive: Jordan Poole

Washington Wizards receive: John Collins

One Western Conference team that needs Jordan Poole’s skillset is the Utah Jazz. Having started the season with a disappointing 4-7 record, the Jazz are in desperate need of better guard play. Their backcourt rotation of Talen Horton-Tucker, Jordan Clarkson, and Collin Sexton has been disappointing so far. Rookie Keyonte George has a lot of promise but he is still a 20-year-old rookie.

Jordan Poole has the ability and potential to be a better version of what Clarkson and Sexton should theoretically provide the Utah Jazz. As Clarkson is aging, Poole could replace him in the starting lineup as their go-to perimeter scorer.

John Collins has been playing well for the Jazz but his fit with Lauri Markkanen has been questionable the moment they acquired him. Having Markkanen, Collins, and Kessler on the floor together might not be the best use of their resources, especially considering they are paying over $25 million a year for Collins. Moreover, they have their lottery pick Taylor Hendricks who plays the same position that they need to develop.

This opens the door for a Collins-for-Poole trade: two potentially valuable but overpaid players who don’t necessarily fit the team they are currently on. The Wizards could certainly use an athlete like John Collins. A forward rotation of Kyle Kuzma, Deni Avdija, and John Collins has an intriguing combination of size, athleticism, and scoring chops. Collins’ ability to play small-ball five would also be useful for the Wizards’ nonexistent big-man depth.

This deal would mean that both teams are pulling the plug on their respective experiments. So, it may seem unlikely for now, but crazier trades have happened in the NBA before.
