3 Growing questions from the Wizards rough start to the season
By John Canady
The Washington Wizards rough start to the season may have been expected by many, but it doesn't change the fact that even in a rebuilding year, Washington has many unanswered questions about their roster.
Not only does the team have many unanswered questions already, but the more they lose, the more questions will arise around their current roster and the future of the organization. Sitting at 2-11, the Wizards have no room for error if they hope to turn their season around.
That said, as Washington rides a nine-game losing streak, here are some growing questions about the Wizards.
Is Jordan Poole apart of the Wizards future plans?
Jordan Poole was handed the keys early in his season season with the Wizards. The young guard has shown flashes throughout his career, and there's no denying his natural ability to put the ball through the hoop. However, as the primary ball handler for his squad, it's more than just scoring the basketball that will allow him to keep his job.
Poole has shown improvement as a passer and efficiency on offense this season. Averaging 21.1 points, 4.6 assists and 2.3 rebounds, the Michigan product has shown he can be a more than servicable option for an NBA roster.
However, his stats have yet to translate to winning and at 25-years-old, at some point if he can contribute to winning it's fair to wonder if he can be apart of the Wizards future.
Can Alex Sarr develop into who the Wizards hope he can become?
Alex Sarr has shown glimpses of what he could become over the first couple weeks of his rookie campaign. In 13 games, the French product is averaging 9.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game on 35.1% shooting from field goal range. On the opposite end of the floor, Sarr has shined as a versatile defender averaging 2.1 blocks per game and just under one steal with 0.8
Despite that, Sarr has also shown why front offices around the league weren't very high on this past NBA Draft class. The tools are there for Sarr to develop into an elite two-way player, but it's clear the 19-year-old has a far way to go.
Is Brian Keefe the answer at head coach?
Brian Keefe was hired as the Wizards head coach after serving as the team's interim head coach last season. Keefe is considered to be one of the best basketball minds in the league, and at times, it looks as if the first-year coach has the Wizards young group playing hard for him. Other times, it's clear that Washington is the worst team in the league.
The lack of talent at Keefe's disposal certainly doesn't help, but the coach may need to show more promise from his end too for him to be the future of this team.
