3 Wizards building blocks, 2 players who should be on the trade block
By John Canady
The Washington Wizards rebuild is inching closer and closer. With a losing record, and a roster that has no urgency to compete now, Washington could be making changes in the coming future.
Looking ahead, general manager Will Dawkins has many roster decisions to make. For one, the decisions on the future of newly acquired Malcolm Brogdon and free agent signing Jonas Valanciunas are two dominos waiting to fall. Neither veteran fits the timeline of Washington's rebuild and both players could immediately impact contenders.
However, aside from the obvious players who could be on the move, here's a look at the Wizards roster and which three players should be considering a building block, and which two players should be on the trade block.
Alex Sarr - Building Block
Alex Sarr was selected with the No. 2 overall draft pick in this year's NBA Draft. The French product has shown flashes of how good he can be as a two-way star in this league. At 7-foot, between his versatility on defense and an improving offensive game, Sarr without a doubt will be a building block for the Wizards as they look towards the future.
Johnny Davis - Trade Block
Johnny Davis was drafted with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. After a monster season in his sophomore year at Wisconsin, the Wizards selected the guard with hopes that he could be a future star in Washington. Not only has Davis been disappointing in three years with the Wizards, but he's looked like he may not even be an NBA caliber player at times.
Averaging 3.1 points, 1.4 rebounds and 0.3 assists so far this season, Davis' time should be up in Washington.
Carlton Carrington - Building Block
Carlton Carrington was selected with the last pick in the lottery this offseason. The 19-year-old showcased his ability to impact the game all over the court in his lone season at Pittsburgh, and he's continued to do that in his rookie season with Washington.
Carrington has worked his way into the starting lineup from the jump. Averaging 9.9 points, 5.1 assist and 4.5 rebounds on 43.2% shooting from the field, the guard has the tools to be an all-around star for the Wizards.
Kyle Kuzma - Trade Block
While Kyle Kuzma may be an obvious choice to some, many believe that Kuzma could still stay put in Washington for the long term despite his age and reported interest on the trade market. Despite that, it makes absolutely no sense for Kuzma to stay with the Wizards right now, or in the future.
Washington could offload the talented forward for a hefty package that could include multilple draft assets and/or young players that the team could look to develop as part of their rebuild.
Kyshawn George - Building Block
Kyshawn George is another first round pick from the Wizards rookie draft class over the offseason. The Miami product has quickly impressed and his growing confidence continues to allow him to showcase how impactful he can be.
With his versatility, underrated jumper and size, there's no limit to what George could be if he continues to develop. Fortunately for him, the Wizards are the best franchise for him to do that with.
