The Washington Wizards' coming decisions this offseason will be based on much different motives than moves over the last few years.
The team is hoping to compete sooner rather than later as the Trae Young and Anthony Davis era in D.C. fully begins next season.
As general manager Will Dawkins and President of Monumental Basketball Michael Winger strategize to put together a roster full of high-upside players who can contribute to winning, they'll need to take a hard look at their roster and decide which players are here to stay and which no longer fit the team's vision moving forward.
And if they truly hope to be taken seriously moving forward, the team has to move on from multiple players this offseason.
F Anthony Gill
Every team needs a solid veteran option on their bench, one that can be a staple for what the team embodies, similar to the impact Udonis Haslem had with the Miami Heat during the back half of his career.
However, Anthony Gill has simply overstayed his time in D.C. at this point.
The forward hasn't contributed much during his time with the Wizards, and while he may have been considered as a solid vet option for a developmental team, Washington no longer needs that presence around.
Beyond just the lack of need for his presence as a developmental vet, the Wizards could use the vacant roster spot to sign a player with a higher chance of contributing solid minutes, whether that be a win-now vet or a young talent like Julian Reese, who's proven he's worthy of a standard contract.
F Cam Whitmore
Cam Whitmore's potential is obvious; he's showcased that during his time with both the Houston Rockets and Wizards.
At the same time, the young forward's growing pains alone don't put him in the position to make an impact for Washington any time soon, at least not with the likes of Kyshawn George and Will Riley ahead of him on the depth chart.
Considering all of the factors of why he's better off continuing his development elsewhere, the team should look to move Whitmore to a situation where he can see expanded opportunities.
If Washington does opt to move Whitmore, there's a chance they could bolster their roster with a solid veteran who could help improve their supporting cast ahead of what the team hopes to be a playoff-worthy season.
G D'Angelo Russell
D'Angelo Russell may be the most obvious name on this list.
Since joining Davis in the blockbuster trade ahead of the NBA trade deadline, the veteran guard has yet to suit up for a game with the Wizards, and not because he's been unavailable to do so, but because the team and he decided it wasn't best for the team's future.
With that said, it seems as if all signs point to Russell being moved on from this offseason, which alone will offer the team some flexibility to make additional moves.
