The Washington Wizards have a big decision looming in the next few weeks, one that could completely alter the direction of the franchise moving forward.
With the top pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, the Wizards have the chance to secure their future cornerstone they can build around for the forseeable future.
Ultimately, the decision has seemed to come down to whether or not the Wizards should select BYU standout AJ Dybantsa or Kansas star Darryn Peterson, both of whom could be a superstar in the DMV.
Peterson's admission of wanting to play point guard at the next level has already put a wrinkle in the team's offseason plans, which alone shifted the focus to Dybantsa as the most likely selection.
As for Dybantsa, the versatile forward has seemed to extend a clear pitch to Washington for why the team should select him with the No. 1 overall pick.
AJ Dybantsa sends clear message for why the Wizards should draft him
On a recent episode of the Gil's Arena show, the projected top pick made his case clear for why the Wizards should use their top selection on him:
“I’m super versatile as a player," Dybantsa said. "I can guard 1-through-5 … I play the game the right way … I’m an exciting player. I have a lot of highlight plays. I fill seats.”
It's hard to argue with any of Dybantsa's points, especially considering he's the exact type of player Washington has been desperately searching for since their rebuild began.
The versatile forward has MVP potential. He fits an immediate position need, and his upside to be more than just a wing proves exactly why he fits the mold of the "do-it-all" player the Wizards need to compete against top contenders.
And his final statement about his ability to fill seats perfectly matches the business aspect of why selecting him at No. 1 makes the most sense for the Wizards.
Dybantsa could put the Wizards back on the map
It's already been discussed about how Dybantsa could help the Wizards become a free agent destination again, and that alone is a win for Washington.
Still, for years, the Wizards have been viewed as the laughing stock of the league, and in turn, their price of admission has been among the bottom of the league.
Landing a talent like Dybantsa could immediately turn that around, and for an owner like Ted Leonsis, this is the exact type of move that could pay dividends for his team.
