There's been a lot of talk about how the Washington Wizards have put themselves in an awkward position. However, Anthony Davis could end up being way better for the Wizards than most people realize. Specifically, he could help figure out whether or not Alex Sarr is best used in double-big lineups or one-big lineups
Up to this point in his career, Sarr has primarily been playing center in a single-big lineup. And that works for Davis, because Davis has always wanted to play the four with another big man on the court with him. In Washington, he should have the chance to do that. So, if Sarr can thrive as a five next to another big man like Davis, then the Wizards have a better idea of where he is best suited to play.
However, if Sarr struggles with another big man on the floor next to him, then maybe he needs to be a standalone center. This could actually be a good experiment for the future of Sarr and the Wizards.
Anthony Davis can help check if Alex Sarr is good in double-big lineups
Last year, Sarr had a little bit of a breakout. He looked more like the player the Wizards thought they were getting when they took him with the second overall pick.
And after years of sitting around at the bottom of the Eastern Conference and not getting a top pick, the Wizards finally decided to take some action of their own and hit the trade market.
Washington made two huge trades. First, they traded for Trae Young to be their new starting point guard. Then came the Davis trade. They added two former All-Stars to the mix.
Ironically, Washington then went on to win the draft lottery, eventually selecting AJ Dybantsa. But still, having two stars alongside their young core should be a good thing for the Wizards.
Davis and Sarr are inevitably going to be the Wizards' starting front court. Davis can play the four while Sarr plays the five. Davis might take on some big man matchups so Sarr can play off the ball, but the two will definitely get a chance to coexist in the frontcourt.
Up to this point in his short-lived NBA career, Sarr hasn't really gotten the chance to play with another great big man like Davis. Now, he'll get that chance, and the Wizards can evaluate just how well he plays in a double-big lineup.
That should give them a good idea of how to build around him moving forward.
