The Washington Wizards offseason has been the exact opposite of quiet.
Instead of standing pat and heading into next season with just the development of the young players already on the roster in mind, general manager Will Dawkins took the team's rebuilding process one step further.
Dawkins opted to land a key veteran presence in CJ McCollum, managed to swing arguably a top 5 NBA Draft class and find ways to position the team for a potentially big offseason next summer with their newfound financial flexibility.
However, arguably the most overlooked move of the team's offseason is the addition of Cam Whitmore from the Houston Rockets.
Heading into the offseason, Whitmore's time in Houston seemed to be pointing towards the end. With the writing on the wall for the Villanova product trending towards a fresh start, the Wizards capitalized on the opportunity and struck a deal with the Rockets in order to fill a huge need for not only their current roster, but future rebuild.
And the fact of how well Whitmore will address that need is exactly why the Wizards acquisition will quickly look genius.
Whitmore's offensive upside is set to address Wizards biggest need
Whitmore never got the opportunity to carve out a role in the Rockets rotation, especially with Ime Udoka quickly turning Houston's rebuilding movement into a contender in the Western Conference.
From prioritizing a youth movement in H-Town to capitalizing on a championship window after landing Kevin Durant earlier in the offseason, the role the Rockets had available for the forward only shrunk.
Now, in Washington, his biggest strength couldn't match the Wizards biggest need any better.
In the limited opportunity the wing has received over the last two seasons, he's shown the potentialk to be an explosive scorer with the ball in his hands.
Whitmore's athleticism, quickness and finishing around the rim make him a dynamic slasher on offense, but he's shown the potential to knock down jumpers.
With more playing time, there's a possibility that the team's newest addition could immediately put together a career-year and along the way prove exactly why the Wizards jumped at the opportunity to land the former first-round talent.
If Whitmore's able to capitalize on the increased opportunity and tap into the potential Washington is betting on, there's real upside that he could transcend Brian Keefe's offense and allow for the Wizards to take a big step forward this coming season.
