The Washington Wizards have had multiple talented players put on the team's jersey over the years to represent Washington and the District of Columbia.
Looking back at the list of talented players, names like Michael Jordan, Gilbert Arenas and Bradley Beal come to mind. However, one name that needs to be mentioned was and still is one of the biggest fan favorites to ever lace up his shoes for the Wizards; and that isJohn Wall.
Wall was selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft by the Wizards and he lived up to every bit of hype that he entered the league out of Kentucky with. The versatile guard was an explosive slasher, had some of the best ball handling ability the NBA has ever seen, he could score at will and he has the facilitating skills to exploit any defensive mistakes.
In 573 regular season games with the Wizards, Wall averaged 19 points, 9.2 assists and 4.3 rebounds, while shooting 43.3% from field goal range and 32.4% from beyond the arc. Despite his success in Washington, injuries seemingly derailed his career and the team's lack of effort to build a contending team around him led to him being dealt in a blockbuster trade that landed him in Houston.
It wasn't long after the trade that Wall would find himself out of the league following his stops with the Rockets and Los Angeles Clippers along the way. Although the guard proved he still had what it took to contribute to an NBA team, team's felt he couldn't contribute enough to keep him on an active roster.
After multiple years of attempting to make an NBA comeback, Wall's efforts have seemingly fallen short time and time again despite his countless workouts in front of general managers across the league. As a result, the 5x NBA All-Star has turned to broadcasting looking to further his love for the game in some way shape or form.
However, the guard has gone on record to say he still has hope for an NBA comeback and would love to end his career on his own terms.
Could it make sense for the Wizards to sign John Wall?
That leads me to thinking, if there's any team that is in position to give Wall a cheap deal to showcase he still has the ability to play at a high enough level, it's the team he began his career with.
The Wizards are in no position to win now, and they made the offseason move to land Malcolm Brogdon and Jonas Valanciunas in efforts to provide their young roster with veteran leaders to teach them the ins-and-outs of the league. However, both of these players have a steep price tag and there's no telling that they'll remain on the roster past the February trade deadline.
A player like Wall who has years of experience and love for the franchise could be the perfect candidate to sign on a cheap deal. The veteran guard has a deep understanding of the game and if he can still lace them up and perform as well as he believes he can, the Wizards could be in position to make a signing that's beneficial for both sides.
After all Wall did for the organization, doing the former Wizards star a favor could work out in the end.
