Even an offensive explosion from Jordan Poole couldn’t snap Wizards losing streak
By John Canady
The Washington Wizards went head-to-head with the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday with a chance for Brian Keefe’s squad to end their five game losing streak,
Unfortunately, the Wizards couldn’t get the job done on the road and their losing streak has extended to six games. With Washington’s season starting to slip away, their rebuild is starting to near closer and closer.
Despite the loss, the lone bright spot for the Wizards was their starting point guard Jordan Poole. Following the game, there wasn’t much confidence coming from Washington’s locker room, and understandably so. But one player they can’t blame for the losing streak extending is Poole, who left everything he had on the floor.
Poole goes off for 42 points
The final score between the Wizards and the Spurs may have been one of the highest-scoring spouts of the NBA regular season this year. Washington fell short to San Antonio 139-130, and it may have been one of the most fun games to watch of the season.
Poole finished the matchup with 42 points, six assists and two rebounds shooting 68% from field goal range (15/22 FG) and 66% from three. Not only was the guard unstoppable on offense, but he did his part on defense with two steals in the loss.
Despite his solid performance, the team couldn’t overcome the absolute masterclass put on by former No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama. The 7-foot-3 versatile center finished his night with 50 points, six rebounds, and two assists. Shooting 62% from field goal range (18/29 FG) and 50% from beyond the arc (8/16), the big man put on an absolute display of the talent he was highly coveted for last offseason.
In addition to Poole’s stellar performance, there were multiple other Wizards who stepped up to the occasion looking to help Washington get the win. However, it may not be the players you’re thinking of.
Corey Kispert was the Wizards second leading scorer with his 19 points he added off the bench. Shooting 58% from field goal range, including five triples, the Gonzaga product played a big part of the Wiz’s comeback efforts in this one.
Another player that showed up on Wednesday night was the Wizards big offseason addition Jonas Valanciunas. The big man ended his night shooting 50% from the field on the way to a double-double in which he scored 16 points and added on 13 rebounds.
Despite the solid outings, the Wizards losing streak continues and if they can’t get their season back on track soon, they’ll certainly be in the mix for the No. 1 overall pick.
