The Washington Wizards injuries have managed to make an already bizarre start to the season take a turn for the worse.

Washington's injury woes have forced head coach Brian Keefe to search for answers deep on the team's bench and after declaring that no minutes would be given, but instead earned this offseason, Washington found themselves turning to a second-round pick on Thursday night.

Jamir Watkins found his name called upon ahead of the team's matchup against the Boston Celtics,

With the former Florida State star getting the nod from Keefe and his coaching staff, it proves that not only has he impressed the team's decision-makers, but he's earned a bit of trust for his first real crack at NBA minutes to come in a starting role.

Perhaps Washington was banking on his defensive versatility to be a calling card against the Celtics, or maybe they were simply just looking for a surge of energy from the depth chart.

Regardless of what the reason was for the team to give Watkins the nod, the reigning second rounder held the opportunity to prove he should be receiving rotation minutes even when the team returned to full health.

Instead, he may have proven that he still needs more time to develop before being a true impact player.

Jamir Watkins wasted his opportunity

Watkins looked like a two-way threat during his time with the Florida State Seminoles, but entering the league it was clear that his way to playing time would come courtesy of his defensive skillset.

Against a wounded Celtics team, it seemed like a real possibility that his versatility could play a major role in Washington keeping pace with Joe Mazzulla's team.

Unfortunately, Watkins' first NBA start quickly proved that he still has a ways to go before he can be a consistent contributor.

In 18 minutes, Watkins finished with two points, two rebounds and three assists making his lone attempt from the field.

However, his inability to record a steal, a block or simply just play solid defense is the most concerning issues of them all.

Finishing the matchup as a -30, Watkins lack of impact was on full display which is partially why Keefe and the staff opted to look in another direction throughout this matchup.

The potential for Watkins to develop is there, but until he's able to contribute consistently, it's safe to say that Keefe will look in another direction the next time his squad needs a lift.
